History of Wasps

Founded in 1991, Crawley Wasps have been instrumental in the successful development of girls football in the Crawley area. From the early days of playing 7-a-side on full size pitches in the Sussex Girl's League, the club have expanded to over 100 playing members in teams at all levels from under 11 to under 16 and seniors. U11 and U12 teams now play mini-soccer in the Sussex County Women and Girls League while the U13 to U16 teams play 11-a-side in the Surrey County Girls League.

In 2004 Wasps moved to Pease Pottage where they now maintain their own playing and training facilities with Mini soccer, youth and senior pitches as well as a floodlit training area.

Wasps led the way in the move to 11-a-side for girls by playing outside Sussex in various Surrey Leagues. Wasps were a founding member of the Surrey County Girls League with U15 and U14 teams playing in their inaugural year in season 2002/2003.

In 2005 Wasps began their sponsorship of league and cup competitions for Crawley schools, hosting play-offs and finals and publishing results on the Wasps website (www.crawleywasps.co.uk). Wasps remain committed to the development of girl's football in the area and in 2006 were awarded Charter Standard by the FA.

Wasps have provided the Centre of Excellence teams at Chelsea and Brighton with many of their players and a number of ex Wasps players now play for major clubs including Chelsea and Arsenal. One has won a scholarship to play in the USA and others have been selected for the England squad at youth team level.
