Crawley Wasps Girls U15 (1) v Predators Girls U15 (1)

Crawley Wasps defender Issy Jefferies scored a wonder goal from the half way line to rescue a point for Wasps.

Wasps started the game brightly and dominated the first half in terms of possession but were unable to create many clear cut scoring chances. The blazing sunshine, hard pitch and cross field wind were causing both teams problems and the first half looked likely to end scoreless until Predators were awarded a penalty five minutes before half time, which Remi Marie Crawley tucked away for a one nil lead for Predators.Wasps again had most of the possession in the second half but struggled in front of goal and looked to be heading for a home defeat. With seven minutes left, a forward ball from Predators bounced invitingly just inside the Predators half for Wasps defender Issy Jefferies and she stepped forward and struck a mighty looping forward ball that carried all the way over the goalkeepers head and under the bar for a wonderful goal. This game keeps Wasps in third place in the league with two games to go.

Crawley Wasps Girls U15 (3) v Southdown Girls U15 (1)

Crawley Wasps midfielder Kelly Poynton scored once and made two other goals as Wasps beat Southdown in their latest Sussex County Girls League game. Wasps took the lead after twenty minutes when a through ball was played over the top of the Southdown defence by Kelly Poynton to Sarah Prentice, who fought her way through three recovering defenders and forced the ball past the goalkeeper. Wasps extended their lead five minutes from the end of the first half. Kelly Poynton played her way round the Southdown defender and crossed the ball to a waiting Chloe Homewood, who finished first time low and hard into the corner of the goal. Southdown replied two minutes later with the best goal of the game, when a great run down the left hand side was completed with a great shot across the Wasps goalkeeper and into the far corner of the net. Wasps came out for the second half hoping to extend their lead and kill the game off but despite their pressure and hitting both the crossbar and and post with different chances they had to wait until the last kick of the game to seal their victory. Sarah Prentice ran clear of the Southdown defence and Kelly Poynton was waiting in the penalty area to get a well deserved goal and complete a three - one win for the Wasps.

Marle Place Girls U15 (3) v Crawley Wasps Girls U15 (4)

Chloe Homewood was the hero for Crawley Wasps as they clinched a narrow 4-3 win in Burgess Hill.

With Wasps normal goalkeeper absent, centre forward Homewood volunteered to take her place and kept Wasps in the game in the second half with several marvellous saves.

Wasps went into the game with only ten girls, but started the match really well forcing Marle Place back into their own half and creating a number of early chances. From one of several corners, the ball was cleared to Brooke Webb who hooked the ball back on the half volley into the far corner of the net for a good opening goal. Mary Southgate extended Wasps lead to two-nil when, after a great run and cross from Sarah Prentice, she slotted the ball home from inside the six yard box. Half time came and Wasps were playing well and looking comfortable.

The second half started and Marle Place were determined to get back in the game, forcing Wasps further and further back and Wasps were having to make some last ditch tackles to keep their lead. Marle Place got the goal their hard work deserved and when they tied the game at two-two with twenty minutes left, Wasps were struggling to stay in the game and needed to find some inspiration. They found it from their stand in goalkeeper Chloe Homewood who then made two fabulous saves from shots which were certain goals. Wasps stepped up their game and another great run down the left hand side of the penalty area by Mary Southgate saw her cut inside the defender and fire low into the corner of the goal to put Wasps ahead again. Wasps extended their lead to four-two with a rare headed goal. A free kick was clipped into the penalty area by Kelly Poynton and Sarah Prentice got her 16th goal of the season from a smart glancing header. Again Marle Place came back at Wasps to make it four-three but Wasps held on for a satisfying win.

Southdown Girls U15 (2) v Crawley Wasps Girls U15 (9)

A hardworking and determined team performance from Wasps U15 team saw them eventually overwhelm a spirited Southdown side. Wasps got off to a flying start when they scored from their first attack of the game with Mary Southgate firing in from the edge of the penalty area. Wasps had the majority of the play for the rest of the first half but struggled to get past a determined home defence who battled for every ball and made it as difficult fas possible for the Wasps. Wasps scored again in the last minute of the first half when Sarah Prentice ran clear of the defence to make the score two-nil at half time.

Southdown stayed in the game for the first twenty minutes of the second half as they pulled a goal back after Hannah Cousins has extended Wasps lead. Sarah Prentice scored her second goal of the game and her fifteenth of the season to make it four-one to the Wasps but again Southdown pulled a goal back to make it four-two. With twenty minutes left the home team started to tire and their heads started to drop a little as Wasps rattled in five goals through Issy Jefferies (2), Grace Jeffrey (2) and a second of the match for Hannah Cousins for a final score of nine-two.

Crawley Wasps Girls U15 (2) v Polegate Girls U15 (1)

Crawley Wasps midfielder Kelly Poynton scored twice as they produced a great team performance to defeat a strong Polegate team.. Wasps went into the game without their first choice goalkeeper Keeley Sydes who was injured during the week. Her sister Dainah Sydes volunteered to go in goal and she had a great game making several fine saves at critical stages of the game. Wasps scored early in the first half with a great strike from Kelly Poynton. An cross from the left hand side was cleared by a Polegate defender to the centre of the pitch just outside the penalty area. The ball fell right into the path of Poynton who struck it first time high over the goalkeeper and watched it dip under the crossbar to give Wasps the lead. Polegate forced their way back into the game late in the first half and got an equaliser but although Wasps had had most of the play and the better chances, the game was evenly balanced at half time. The second half saw Polegate try hard to get the upper hand but Wasps defence was in great form with Sarah Rusling in particular having an outstanding game protecting her stand-in goalkeeper and reducing the Polegate attackers to a couple of long range shots. Wasps started to control the game, they were finishing the match really strongly and had come close to finding a winner on several occasions. With fifteen minutes left a tactical change for Wasps saw Kelly Poynton moved to centre forward as Wasps played with three attackers and looked for a winning goal. Poynton, playing with a lot of confidence after her great goal earlier, delivered the winning goal with ten minutes left. A good Wasps move down the right hand side saw the ball crossed to the left hand side of the penalty area and after her first shot was saved she bravely followed up the rebound to head in her second goal to win the game for the Wasps

Polegate Girls U15 (2) v Crawley Wasps Girls U15 (2)

Crawley Wasps survived a comeback from Polegate to hold on to a draw in difficult conditions in Eastbourne. This was a game that lacked any real quality from either side as the rain and muddy pitch stopped either team from playing the football they would like to. Wasps struggled for the first twenty five minutes of the first half and were on the back foot against a very keen and physical Polegate side. Wasps then made a couple of positional changes, their game started to improve and they started to control more of the game in midfield. This led to scoring chances and Kelly Poynton gave Wasps the lead when, with great persistance and tenacity, she battled through three challenges in the penalty area to score from close range. Wasps started the second half well and it did not take them long to extend their lead. A great move down the left hand side of the pitch from Louise Langham Ready and Sarah Prentice was crossed for Chloe Homewood, who had got herself into a great position just inside the penalty area, and she calmly side footed the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 to the Wasps. Tiredness then set in for the Wasps as the heavy pitch and not having any substitutes started to affect their game and they let Polegate score two goals midway through the second half to tie the game at 2-2. Wasps tried hard to get a winner but in the end they did not play well enough to deserve all three points and a draw was a fair result. Crawley Wasps are looking for more players for their successful U15 girls side. Anyone in school year 9 or 10 that is interested should contact David Talbut on 07919 398308 for more details.

Crawley Wasps Girls U15 (4) v Marle Place Girls U15 (2)

Sarah Prentice scored two goals as Crawley Wasps beat Marle Place 4-2 at Finches Field.

Wasps mastered the wet and windy conditions first and took the lead early in the first period with Sarah Prentice getting her first goal of the game when she fired in to the roof of the net from the edge of the penalty area. The rest of the first half was very tight with neither side really creating much in front of goal with both defensive units on top.

The second half saw five goals, with Wasps scoring first when a cross from Mary Southgate was turned in at the near post by a Marle Place defender. Marle Place then launched a great comeback to tie the game at 2-2 with ten minutes left and even had chances to win the game as their confidence was boosted from the goals. As Marle Place pushed forward for a winner a lovely through ball from Wasps Chloe Homewood put Sarah Prentice clear of the defence and she finished well for her second goal of the game. It was left to Jade Simmons to seal the victory with a thunderous shot from the edge of the penalty area straight into the top corner for a final score of 4-2 to the Wasps

Crawley Wasps Girls (5) v Oakwood Girls (2)

Wasps entertained local rivals Oakwood in their first match of the Sussex Girls U15 season, in a game which had a sensational ending. Both teams started well and had chances to score in the opening ten minutes. As the game went on Wasps pace in attack was causing problems for the Oakwood defence and another great run from Sarah Prentice found Hannah Cousins in the box who finished well with a clean shot into the corner of the net. Oakwood fought back after this and after twenty five minutes equalised with a great finish from the edge of the area. Wasps had further chances as the game progressed and went in front again shortly before half time after another great run down the left hand side found Ana Correia free in the penalty area to give Wasps a half time lead. At the start of the second half Oakwood pushed Wasps back into their own half and it was no surprise when 15 minutes into the half they found an equaliser from a corner. At this stage the game looked very even and a draw looked a likely result, however Wasps Sarah Prentice had other ideas and she capped an excellent performance by producing a brilliant ten minute hat trick to seal the win for Wasps. All three goals were identical in style as on each occasion she raced through the Oakwood defence leaving defenders behind her and fired past the stranded goalkeeper. Overall a good performance by the Wasps who face the league leaders Eastbourne in their next game.
